PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - University of Tennessee sophomore Dee Dee Trotter closed out a very positive overall experience by the Lady Volunteers at the 109th Penn Relays with a ninth-place finish in the college women's 100-meter dash championship Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.

With 39,783 fans looking on for the final day of the country's oldest track & field meet, Trotter charted a season-best time of 11.70 and increased her 2003 topper by 2/100ths of a second. On a damp, chilly, gray day in Philly, LSU's Muna Lee claimed the trophy with a run of 11.23, followed closely by Miami's Lauryn Williams in 11.25. The runners were aided, however, by an illegal wind of 3.8 meters per second.

Trotter, from Decatur, Ga., had earned a ticket to the finals by virtue of a season-best 11.72 effort in the prelims on Friday. Her mark tied for eighth-fastest of the prelims and ranked her fourth in section one. She is qualified for the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes for the NCAA Mideast Regional on May 30-31 in Columbus, Ohio.

"I thought Dee Dee did a very good job considering the windy and cold conditions here," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "She improved on yesterday's performance and, coupled with her efforts on the relays, she had a very good weekend. I am really excited about her development, and I'm expecting big things from her in the future."

Former Lady Vol Kelli White (1996-99) had a big day at Franklin Field, running the second leg on the winning 4x100m and the opener on the victorious 4x200m relay team for USA Red. White, a 14-time All-American during her days in Knoxville, ran with Angela Williams, Inger Miller and Chryste Gaines on the 4x1 that clocked a 43.10 and led off for LaTasha Colander-Richardson, Donica Merriman and Crystal Cox as that group took the 4x2 in 1:31.41.

A teammate of White's at UT, Erica Witter (1996-99) also ran the second leg on the 4x100m relay, representing her native Canada. Witter and the Canadian squad managed a fourth-place effort in 45.13. Witter was also slated to run in the second slot for the Team Canada 4x400m relay as well.

Jearl Miles-Clark, spouse of UT Head Coach J.J. Clark, joined Crystal Cox, Donna Howard-Arnett and Demetria Washington on the USA Red 4x400m relay quartet for a victorious reading of 3:26.65. Running the second position, Miles-Clark lined up alongside Witter, whose Canadian team was sixth in 3:43.17.

Another former Lady Vol, Maureen (Ferris) Mewett ran in the Women's Olympic Development Mile, finishing sixth in a time of 4:43.90 while running for adidas.

Clark's Tennessee squad will join the UT men in hosting the Knoxville Invitational at Tom Black Track on Sunday. The first women's event, the women's hammer, begins at 9:30 a.m. The first distaff running event is the 100m dash at 1:50 p.m. The competition will feature schools such as Carson-Newman, Georgia, Ole Miss and Western Carolina, among others, and several unattached and club affiliations.
