PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The University of Tennessee's 4x100-meter relay advanced to Friday's final, and the Lady Vols charted new NCAA regional qualifying marks in three events Thursday at the 111th Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

In the first running event of the meet for Team Orange, the 4x100m combination of sophomore Tianna Madison (Elyria, Ohio), freshman Courtney Champion (Lawrenceville, Ga.), senior Toyin Olupona (Orillia, Ontario, Canada) and freshman Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas) won heat five and advanced to Friday's "Championship of America" race. Their clocking of 44.68, coming in UT's first 4x1 effort of the season, was the fifth-best of the nine squads qualifying for the final, and it was faster than the necessary 45.80 output needed to earn a spot in the NCAA Mideast Regional meet on May 27-28.

On Friday, Tennessee will need to out-perform LSU (44.29), Pittsburgh (44.38), Florida (44.54) and South Carolina (44.57) in an effort to claim its first Penn Relays title since 1994 and its second victory all-time, including the initial triumph in 1984. The race is scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern Time.

In the DMR later in the afternoon on Thursday, Tennessee was unable to defend its 2004 Penn Relays crown, settling for seventh place in 11:26.79 with only one member of last year's tandem on board. Duke claimed its first triumph in that event at this meet, with Shannon Rowbury anchoring the Blue Devils to victory in a time of 11:10.18.

UT's Dee Dee Trotter, Kameisha Bennett and Lindsay Hyatt all departed after last season, leaving Brooke Novak (Kaukauna, Wis.) as the sole returnee today, and following the junior's opening 1,200-meter leg, the Lady Vols stood in 11th place. Senior Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.) got the Big Orange back into the mix, logging the DMR's fastest 400-meter split of the day in 52.5 to rally her quartet to seventh. Junior Patricia Hall (St. Ann, Jamaica) and junior Felicia Guliford (Gallup, N.M.) handled the 800m and 1,600m legs, respectively, but neither was able to make up any more ground on their competitors.

In throws events on Thursday, junior Ariel Brooks (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) both notched improvements in the discus. Brooks, already qualified for the regional meet in this event, charted a career-best-tying throw of 159-11/48.75m and took fifth in the college division. Dickenson, meanwhile, unleashed a season-best fling of 159-5/48.59m to merit a regional berth and wound up sixth.

In the college division of the hammer throw, Brooks began the day with a toss of 174-1/53.06m to place eighth. Dickenson, meanwhile, was unable to land a fair throw.

Senior Elizabeth McCalley, who is already qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, also earned a ticket in the 5,000 meters at the Penn Relays.

McCalley, a senior from Knoxville's Karns High School, covered the distance in a career-best time of 16 minutes, 48.13 seconds to place 10th in the championship division of the 5K. The four-year distance standout is now qualified for the regional meet in two events, as she made the field in the steeplechase at the Sea Ray Relays on April 16.

Lady Vol junior Katie Flaute also ran with McCalley Thursday night in ideal conditions at Franklin Field, but the Dayton, Ohio, product didn't fare quite as well, finishing 25th in 17:27.50.

In addition to the 4x100m relay competing on Friday, sophomore Edra Finley (Mobile, Ala.) will take part in the triple jump at 11 a.m., and UT's sprint medley relay will attempt to defend its 2004 Penn Relays title at 6:20 p.m. The Lady Vol SMR set collegiate, meet, stadium and school records a year ago.
