NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- University of Tennessee junior Caitlin Ward produced personal-record performances in all four events Thursday and surged into fifth place out of 14 competitors with 3168 points after day one of the women's heptathlon at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Ward's best-ever first-day point total tops a score of 2895 that she recorded at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville just last month. Jessica Stockard of Georgia grabbed the lead after four events with 3505 points, followed by LaToya McBride of Ole Miss (3461), Beyonka McDowell of Arkansas (3461) and Megan Akre of LSU (3291).

"Caitlin was clicking today and is off to a great start," UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "Any time you get four PRs, it's a good day. She just needs to come back out tomorrow and keep it going."

In the first event of the day, Ward cut through the afternoon humidity at the Vanderbilt University Track Complex with a career-best time of 15.02 in the 100-meter hurdles. That clocking, which came against a minimal head wind of -0.5 meters per second, provided the Lady Vol entry 839 points and put her in ninth position heading into the next event.

Ward came right back in the high jump to log another career-topping performance, sailing over the bar at five feet, four-and-one-quarter inches. Entering with a personal best of 4-11.50, the Gibsonia, Pa., native cleared eight heights, including four she had never previously traversed. The strong showing garnered Ward 771 points to stand in 11th after two events with 1610 points.

The UT multi-eventer made it three-for-three on career bests in event number three, as she unleashed a first-attempt throw of 37 feet, 10 inches to place fourth in the shot put. The mark garnered Ward 630 points and lifted her into sixth place entering the da's final activity with a score of 2240.

Ward slammed the door on the first day of competition by batting 1.000 on PRs. She won heat one in a time of 24.56, a mark that would stand as the third-fastest of the evening, and collected 928 points for her work.

The UT student-athlete is back in action at 4 p.m. on Friday, as she takes part in the long jump, javelin throw and 800 meters to wrap things up. Other events being contested on day two include the hammer throw and 10,000-meter run finals as well as prelims in the 200 and 800 meters and the 400-meter hurdles.
