OXFORD, Miss. - University of Tennessee sophomore Caitlin Ward and freshman Edra Finley both saved their best for last. The Lady Vol heptathletes charted career-best efforts to wind up Thursday evening in 10th and 12th places, respectively, at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Ole Miss.

The UT multi-eventers will enter the final day of the SEC heptathlon with point totals of 2,870 and 2,844, respectively. Those accumulations represent a career best for Ward and a season best for Finley and leave the Big Orange duo within striking distance of providing points to the team tally on Friday. Vanderbilt's Josie Hahn rolled up 3,303 points to grab the day one lead, followed by South Carolina's Chelsea Hammond in second with 3,261.

In the first event of the heptathlon, Finley and Ward pulled double duty in the 100-meter hurdles. After their first race was run without the timing system operating, the UT duo had to line up again. For the record, Finley won heat one and was third overall in 14.42 to collect 920 points. Ward, meanwhile, was third in that heat and 10th overall in a career-best 15.30 to garner 802 points.

In the high jump, Finley tallied 655 points and placed 12th with a season-best jump of 5-0.25, while Ward cleared 4-9.75 to scrape together 588 points and place 14th. After two events, Finley and Ward stood in 11th and 14th, respectively, with scores of 1,575 and 1,390.

In the shot put, Ward utilized one of her strongest events to pull herself back into the mix. Her heave of 36-4 was good for 600 points and fifth place and moved her into 12th place overall with 1,990 points. Finley, meanwhile, managed a measurement of 26-10.50 to collect 412 points and finish 14th in the shot. She stood 13th among the field with 1,987 points heading into the final event of day one.

In the 200 meters, Ward wound up her Thursday action with a career-best clocking of 25.07 to cross the line second in heat two and third overall with 800 points. Finley, meanwhile closed out the first day in equally-fine fashion, registering a career-topping time of 25.33 to take second in heat two, finish fourth overall and bag 857 points.

"We ended the day on a positive note with career bests from both of them in the 200 meters," Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "They will both need to have great second days to move into contention, and that's what we expect to happen. I look for continued enthusiasm for the final day."

Friday's action begins at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw, while the evening session is slated to get underway at 5 p.m. CT and includes the final three events of the heptathlon as well as the 10,000 meters and the prelims for the 200 and 800 meters and 400-meter hurdles.
