NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Felicia Guliford snared a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters, and Caitlin Ward came up with a fourth-place effort in the heptathlon to lift the fourth-ranked University of Tennessee women into a tie for third place Friday night after two days of competition at the 2005 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Georgia leads the team standings with 32 points after three events scored. Arkansas is second with 30, followed by Tennessee and Auburn with 12, Florida and Mississippi with eight, Alabama with six, Vanderbilt with five and LSU with four. Kentucky and Mississippi State have not scored.

Ward, who put together a career-best score of 5108 and deposited five key points into the Big Orange ledger, began the afternoon by carving out finishes of 10th in the long jump at 17-4.25/5.29m (640 points) and ninth in the javelin with a PR of 93-8/28.54m (449 points). She then closed out the day impressively by easily winning the 800 meters at 2:18.01 to tally 851 points. Her career-topper in the 800m gave her an impressive six PRs in seven events this weekend.

A junior from Gibsonia, Pa., Ward produced an NCAA provisional qualifying score for the first time in her career and moved into the points at SEC Outdoors after placing 12th in 2003 and 10th in 2004. She also has a sixth-place SEC pentathlon result in 2004 to her credit. Her score ranks her eighth on UT's all-time performers list.

In the 10K, Guliford covered the distance in a career-best clocking of 34 minutes, 44.97 seconds to wrap up day two with a six-point windfall. Her time was the fastest by a Lady Vol in that event since 1982. Only former UT standout Alison Quelch was faster, logging efforts of 34:08.0 and 34:29.0 in 1985 and 1983, respectively. Junior Katie Flaute (Dayton, Ohio), meanwhile, was 10th Friday night in 37:01.17.

Guliford, a junior from Gallup, N.M., challenged for runner-up honors, but Arkansas standout Laura Jakosky utilized a strong kick over the final lap to hold off the Big Orange competitor in 34:38.73. Auburn's Angela Homan took the title in 34:21.19.

Senior Nicole Cook (Petersburg, Va.), who had not run a race since the NCAA Indoor Championships due to an injury to her lower right leg, debuted in a regional-qualifying 2:06.34 to advance to Sunday's 800-meter final with the fifth fastest time. Classmate Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.) logged a career-best readout of 2:07.72 to earn a lane in her initial SEC 800m final. Gorham's mark was the sixth best of the evening.

Also running but not advancing were sophomore Robin Mortel (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who made her inaugural UT appearance in 2:12.19, as well as sophomore Mindy Sullivan (Lubbock, Texas) in 20th at 2:12.74 and junior Brooke Novak (Kaukauna, Wis.) in 23rd at 2:15.34.

Running in her first 400-meter hurdles race of the season, junior Patricia Hall (St. Ann, Jamaica) made her coaches look wise for entering her, as she grabbed a lane in the final by notching the sixth best time of the prelims in 61.17. Ward, on the heels of finishing the heptathlon earlier in the day, wound up 11th in 67.47 and did not advance.

Things didn't go as planned in the 200 meters, where the Lady Vols only moved one competitor on to Sunday after sending three to the finals at the SEC Indoor meet. Freshman Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas) was the lone qualifier, winning heat four in a career-best 23.31 and zipping to the fourth best time of the evening. Conference Indoor runner-up freshman Courtney Champion (Lawrenceville, Ga.), sophomore Tianna Madison (Elyria, Ohio) and freshman LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) missed the cut with times of 23.68, 24.10 and 24.16, respectively.

Junior Ariel Brooks (Miami, Fla.) supplied Tennessee with its first point of the meet earlier in the day, as she landed a top throw of 183 feet, nine inches (56.01m) to take eighth in the hammer throw. Brooks' measurement of record came on her third attempt of the prelims. Also competing but not scoring for the Lady Vols were junior April Thomas (Albany, Ga.), who was 17th with a career best of 167-1/50.94m, and freshman Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio), who was 21st at 149-3/45.50m. Thomas moved to number four on UT's all-time performer's list with today's output, falling in line behind Brooks (189-3), Janine Tessarzik (175-9) and Andrea Pappas (171-1).

World long jump leader Madison will begin the day for Tennessee on Saturday, as the sophomore attempts to duplicate the SEC title she won indoors at 1 p.m. Central Time. UT will also have athletes in action in the finals of the discus throw (5 p.m. CT) and 3000m steeplechase (9:30 p.m. CT) as well as in prelims of the 1500m run (7:15 p.m. CT), 400m dash (8:20 p.m. CT) and 100m dash (8:55 p.m.).
