GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Tennessee freshman Laquoya Kelly snagged sixth place in the hammer throw Friday night to get the 12th-ranked Lady Volunteers on the scoreboard on day two of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Percy Beard Track.

In the hammer, Kelly entered as the 13th-ranked league performer at 159 feet, six inches. She left that mark in the dust in her first league outdoor meet, unleashing a toss of 174-1 on her third attempt to make the final. She then stretched the tape farther on her final attempt of the competition, maxing out at 175-1 to collect three points in an event in which UT was not projected to score. Classmate Akeela Bravo wound up 13th with a season-best toss of 156-9.

Senior Katie Van Horn's bid for points in the 10,000 meters came up short. She wound up 10th in 37:09.65. Junior Michele Levy, running in her first 10K as a Lady Vol, finished 17th at 39:30.00.

The Lady Vols stand in ninth place with three points after three events scored. Leading the way is Arkansas with 31, followed by Alabama (18), Florida (15), Kentucky (14), Mississippi State (12), LSU (8), Ole Miss (7), Auburn (5). Trailing UT are South Carolina and Georgia with two apiece. Vanderbilt has yet to score.

For the second straight day, thunderstorms suspended the action. The hour-long delay didn't seem to faze the Lady Vol 800-meter brigade in the evening's first women's running event, as three moved along to Sunday's final. Senior Sarah Bowman set the tone in heat one, winning in a career-best 2:03.96 as the fastest qualifier of the prelims. Junior Phoebe Wright claimed heat four in 2:05.64, and freshman Chanelle Price was right behind her in 2:05.67, as they advanced with the third and fourth fastest qualifying marks. Senior Kimarra McDonald just missed making her first SEC final by one spot, placing 10th in 2:09.19.

In the 200 meters, junior Lynne Layne moved along to Sunday's "money race." She did so automatically by taking heat one in a season-best 23.37, which was the third best of the qualifiers. She had entered the race seeded fifth with a wind-aided season best of 23.49.

In the final prelim of the day, freshman Ellen Wortham and senior Amanda Alexander both made the final in the 400m hurdles. Wortham, who posted the eighth fastest time during the regular season, moved along to Sunday's championship race with a career-topping 1:00.02 readout that won heat three and ranked fourth out of the nine qualifiers. Alexander, seeded 14th in the field entering the meet, uncorked a second-and-a-half PR to give UT two scoring opportunities in the event. Her 1:01.34 mark was good for third in heat one and ninth of the qualifiers.

On Saturday, Tennessee will have finals in the discus throw and long jump as well as prelims in the 1500m run, 100m hurdles and 100m dash. Sophomore Annie Alexander enters as the defending champion as well as the NCAA and SEC leader in the discus at 188-9. Senior Celriece Law tops the conference in the hurdles at 13.23, while Layne ranks second in the 100 meters.
