After heavy rains and lightning persisted for 6 1/2 hours and forced lengthy delays in action, officials were forced to postpone all but two events of Wednesday's opening round of action at the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The NCAA said a revamped schedule will be released on the official meet Web-site by midnight Central Time on Wednesday. To access that information, please go to http://www.texassports.com/mainpages/tk_pages/2003_04/ncaa/index.html.
With only the first event of the women's heptathlon as well as the women's 4x100m relay prelims completed, the meet went into delay mode around 1:30 p.m. CT. Several attempts to restart the meet failed when lightning would appear once again in the sky or within close proximity to the University of Texas campus.
Finally, around 8 p.m. CT, an announcement was made that all remaining day one events except for the women's heptathlon and javelin would be contested over the remaining three days of the meet. The possibility existed that those two events might also be further delayed due to inclement weather.
