PALO ALTO, Calif.
University of Tennessee sophomore Nicole Cook wrapped up her season with an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters Sunday afternoon at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Stanford University's Cobb Track & Angell Field. Cook, from Petersburg, Va., charted a time of 2:03.94 to close out her 2003 campaign as one of the top half-milers in America. Running in very esteemed company, Cook saw Jearl Miles-Clark, wife of UT Head Coach J.J. Clark, claim the title in 1:58.94 and earn a trip to the IAAF World Championships in Paris in August. Hazel Clark, J.J.'s younger sister, took sixth in 2:01.71.
Former Lady Vol Kelli White continued a stellar weekend in her home state by shocking the field and registering a sprint double with a victory in the 200 meters in a sizzling 22.21. She had won the 100m dash title two days earlier in a world-leading 10.93. Her time, which rates second on the planet for 200 meters in 2003, came with no measurable wind (0.0).
White held off former Southern California standout Torri Edwards in the 200 just as she did in the 100. Edwards was second Sunday in 22.45. Allyson Felix, a recent graduate of Los Angeles Baptist High School who had been drawing a great deal of world attention, finished third in 22.59.
