UT'S TYSON, DICKENSON SEIZE USATF JUNIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Shanna Dickenson

Shanna Dickenson

June 23, 2005

CARSON, Calif. -- A pair of University of Tennessee freshmen, sprinter Cleo Tyson and thrower Shanna Dickenson, claimed junior national titles at the Home Depot Center late Thursday night at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Tyson, runner-up in the 100-meter dash at the recent NCAA Outdoor Championships, cruised easily to the U.S. junior championship in the 100 meters, while Dickenson uncorked a career-best throw to take the discus title on the opening day of competition. The Lady Vol standouts earned trips to the 2005 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, where they will represent the United States during the July 28-31 competition in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

After rolling to an 11.45 count that won her heat and handily stood as the fastest time of the preliminary round, the Huntsville, Texas, native came back later in the evening to chart an 11.44 reading in the finals that no one came close to matching. South Carolina's Amberly Nesbitt took second in 11.67, while Alexandra Anderson of Firestarters Track Club was third in 11.69. No other entrant finished below 11.87. Tyson will compete in the 200m prelims (5:40 p.m. ET) and finals (10:50 p.m. ET) on Friday.

Dickenson, meanwhile, unleashed a career-topper on her second attempt, stretching the tape to 176 feet, two inches. The Cincinnati, Ohio, product's effort in the prelims, which ranks her seventh on UT's all-time performers list in the discus, withstood all challengers over the next four rounds of throws. Only North Carolina's Jocelyn White and California's Missy Faubus came close to unseating Dickenson, as they took second and third, respectively, with marks of 172-4 and 171-6.

Lady Vol senior Antoinette Gorham (Glenarden, Md.), a late entrant into the 800-meter field, was slated to compete in the first round of that race with former UT standout Kameisha Bennett. Due to a smaller number entrants than expected, however, the event was condensed to two rounds. Bennett and Gorham will now take part in the semifinals at 10:20 p.m. ET on Friday. Also participating will be Jearl Miles-Clark and Hazel Clark, wife and sister of Tennessee Head Coach J.J. Clark.

Former Lady Vol and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Dee Dee Trotter looked sharp in the opening round of the 400 meters. Representing adidas, Trotter's readout of 51.81 won heat three and sent her on to the semifinals (Fri., 10 p.m. ET) with the third-best qualifying mark. Only Sanya Richards and Monique Hennagan, both running for Nike, were faster with heat-winning times of 51.79 and 51.80, respectively.

Closing out the night for those with Tennessee ties was Sharon Dickie. The ex-UT standout and current administrative assistant to J.J. Clark wound up 14th in the finals of the 5000 meters with a time of 16:18.17.

U.S. leader and Big Orange sophomore Tianna Madison will step onto the stage Friday at 8:10 p.m. ET, as she takes part in the finals of the long jump. The 2005 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor champion enters with a mark of 22 feet, 4 1/2 inches, which currently ranks her No. 1 in the U.S. and No. 2 in the world. The Elyria, Ohio, product was the 2004 USATF Junior National champion and finished eighth at last year's U.S. Olympic Trials.
