KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Lady Vol rising senior Annie Alexander was a double winner over the weekend at her country's national track & field meet, winning the discus throw and shot put at the Sagicor-NAAA National Open Championships at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago.
Alexander claimed her fourth-straight T&T crown in the discus on Saturday, stretching the tape measure to 178 feet, one inch on her third attempt after fouls on her first two tries in the prelims. With that throw moving her to the finals, Alexander managed two more legal marks, but neither bettered the previous standard.
On Sunday, the Big Orange standout made it a sweep, taking her first national shot title after placing second the past three years. She opened with a toss of 52-10, which stood until her final attempt. On try number six, she propelled the ball 54-2 3/4 to clinch the victory.
As a junior at UT, Alexander finished third at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships in both events and was the Southeastern Conference Champion with those implements.
She now will wait for confirmation to see whether she'll represent her native country at the IAAF World Championships, which will be held Aug. 27-Sept. 4 in Daegu, Korea.
