KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- For the fifth straight season, Tennessee head coach J.J. Clark will take his Lady Volunteers to the Penn State National Open in University Park, Pa. On Friday and Saturday, the 14th-ranked Big Orange women hope to duplicate the outstanding performances and NCAA qualifying marks that Clark's previous clubs have produced at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

The Lady Vols are coming off two solid opening meets, where they have tallied one NCAA automatic qualifier in the 60 meters in junior Courtney Champion (7.26) and eight provisional marks. Those hitting the provisional list are Champion (Lawrenceville, Ga.) in the 200 meters at 23.61, junior Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas) in the 60m at 7.33, sophomore Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) in the 800m at 2:08.18 and the mile at 4:49.94, freshman Nia Ali (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) in the 60m hurdles at 8.22 and 8.41, respectively, Law in the triple jump at 41-9 1/4 and junior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the weight throw at 62-5.

"We've had people in the last two meets hit qualifying marks, and I believe we will get more and get sharper as the season progresses," Clark said. "That's the idea, and that's what we are training and striving to do."

Tyson is a two-time defending champion in the 60m dash at this meet, having claimed victory in 2005 at 7.36 and a year ago in 7.29. Both marks were career bests at the time. Law, meanwhile, had her breakout meet as a Lady Vol in 2006 when the redshirt freshman cruised to a personal record of 7.36 in the 60m hurdles to notch a surprise second-place finish and move to number two on UT's all-time indoor performers list in that event behind Olympian Benita Fitzgerald.

UT's best meet came in 2004, when Dee Dee Trotter's 200-meter dash effort and the Big Orange distance medley relay lineup set facility, meet and Lady Vol records on this weekend. Even Clark's wife, Jearl Miles-Clark, got into the act, taking the facility mark and setting an American record in the 500 meters as well. Tennessee collected the 4x400m relay meet and facility marks in 2005, and former Lady Vol Tianna Madison walked away with the long jump standard in 2006.

"We have put some big marks on the board at this meet in the past," Clark said. "The reason for that, I think, is because the athletes have trained hard and gotten into good shape to make the facility pay off. It's a 200-meter Mondo banked track, which is where you want to be. They also have a hydraulic system that allows them to raise and lower the turns for sprints and distance, and that makes a big difference.

"I think the timing of the meet, coming after two races and after we have trained all fall, allows us to see some of the benefits of the work we have done. Hopefully we can continue that trend, run hard and qualify more people for the national meet."

One of those who will get her first crack at an NCAA mark this season, and wear orange for the first time in competition, will be sophomore Brittany Daniels (Tracy, Calif.), a transfer from the University of Southern California. Daniels competed for the Women of Troy last season, but she did not approach the American triple jump junior record of 45 feet, 11 3/4 she charted in winning the Gatorade National Girls' Track & Field Athlete of the Year award in 2005. She is hopeful of getting her career back on track as a Lady Vol and could give UT a strong one-two triple jump punch along with the provisionally-qualified Law.

Others hoping to make at least the provisional cut this weekend are UT's distance medley and 4x400m relays, sophomore transfer Pavi'Elle "Tiki" James (Miami, Fla.) in the 60m hurdles, freshman Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) in the 60m dash, Tyson in the 200 meters, LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) in the 400 meters, senior Leslie Treherne (Chesapeake, Va.) in the 800 meters and Rose-Anne Galligan (County Kildare, Ireland) in the mile. A quintet of Lady Vols will also take their chances in the 5000 meters on Friday night.

"I know we are on the right track," Clark said. "People are producing personal bests and running better every week, and that's what is important to me. Eventually if you have good athletes and have them perform better and better every week, they are going to get to nationals, and we are going to do well."

Action begins at 5:45 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
