KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Senior track & field standout Phoebe Wright has been chosen Lady Vol Athlete of the Week, as voted by the University of Tennessee Athletic Media Relations staff on Monday.
Wright, who hails from Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Red Bank High School, earned the award after racing to an automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 800 meters on Saturday at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va. Her effort of two minutes, 4.00 seconds, was good enough to earn her second victory in as many races this season. Other than teammate Chanelle Price, who was just behind Wright in 2:04.72, the Lady Vol captain beat everyone else in the field by more than four seconds.
Wright, who ranks No. 1 in the nation with her mark over the weekend in the 800, also ranks No. 1 in the country in the mile after winning that event at the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 16. Her mark in that event is a career-best 4:43.50. She also ran a leg on Tennessee's 4x400m relay unit at the Hokie Invitational, helping that group finish fourth in a season-best 3:42.80.
This weekend, Wright and her teammates will be back at work. Some of the squad, including the women's distance corps, will travel to University Park, Pa., to take part in the Penn State National Invitational on Jan. 29-30. Other event groups will compete in the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky. on Jan. 29-30 and the J.D. Martin Invitational in Norman, Okla., on Jan. 30.
