KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- With the NCAA Championships only five weekends away, the second-ranked Tennessee women’s track & field team hopes to take advantage of its opportunities to improve and chart additional NCAA qualifying marks. With those goals in mind, the Lady Vols will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to take part in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet Friday and Saturday at Rector Field House.
UT is slated to be one of 11 women’s teams participating in the non-scoring competition. The other squads include No. 9 Virginia Tech, No. 11 Penn State and No. 22 Georgia Tech, as well as Clemson, Duke, Georgia, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina State, Wake Forest and West Virginia. Action runs from 5 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
“We are doing what I would like us to be doing as a team, and that is coming together and executing well,” Big Orange Head Coach J.J. Clark said. “We’re not worried about anything but executing and doing the best we can every trip we take. If we do everything we’re supposed to, the results will show.”
Thus far, Tennessee’s roll call of results reveals automatic NCAA qualifying marks from senior Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas) in the 60m (7.25) and junior Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) in the mile run (4:37.86). The squad also has three provisional qualifiers each in the 60 and 800 meters, one each in the 200m, 5000m, weight throw and shot put, as well as relay teams in the distance medley and 4x400m events. Clark would like to turn some of those provisional marks into automatic NCAA berths.
“We have several areas where we need to keep working,” the sixth-year skipper said. “Our DMR needs to lower its mark to make the NCAA meet, as do our provisional qualifiers in the 60m, 200m, 800m, 4x4, and, down the road at another meet, 5K. We have to strive to achieve the goals we set, and we really are looking at three meets (Va. Tech Elite, Tyson Invitational and SEC Championships) where we need to do a lot.”
As for this weekend, Tennessee will take aim at all the areas Clark mentioned and then some, with the exception of the 5K. Hoping to improve from their provisional positions are senior Courtney Champion (Lawrenceville, Ga.) in the 60m, sophomore Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) in the 200m, sophomore Phoebe Wright (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) in the 800m, senior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the weight throw and freshman Annie Alexander (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago). UT also will send its top DMR and 4x4 units onto the oval in hopes of dropping their times.
Those seeking to work their way toward qualifying berths this weekend are Champion, Tyson and Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.) in the 200m, senior LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) in the 400m, junior Kimarra McDonald (Lumberton, N.J.) in the 800m, freshman Brittany Sheffey (Bellport, N.Y.) in the mile, junior Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) in the 60m hurdles, junior Alicia Essex (Purcellville, Va.) in the pole vault and Alexander in the weight throw.
After posting an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 4:37.86 in the mile run and notching a provisional of 2:07.32 in the 800m last weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial, SEC Female Runner of the Week Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) will get some relay and distance work in at Virginia Tech. She is entered in the 3000 meters and is expected to open or close the UT distance medley quartet. Bowman leads the NCAA ranks in the mile thus far in 2008 and is the defending SEC champion in both the mile and 3000 meters as well as with the Big Orange DMR.
