FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Junior Katie Van Horn led the second-ranked University of Tennessee women’s track & field team Friday, coming up with an NCAA provisional qualifying time and a runner-up finish in the championship division of the 5000 meters during the afternoon session of the Tyson Invitational.
For Van Horn, her clocking of 16 minutes, 24.28 seconds at the Randal Tyson Track Center was her best time ever, topping a previous mark of 16:32.79 that landed her third a year ago at this meet. The new readout is the fastest indoor 5K by a Lady Vol since Patty Wiegand in 1991. Only Wiegand (16:12.03) and Kathy Bryant (16:23.7, 1982) have run faster times at that distance, and after her effort, Van Horn ranks fifth nationally and first in the SEC.
“Katie put a nice 5K PR and second-place finish on the board tonight,” UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. “She is really coming into her own. She is very capable of running faster, but she didn’t get any help tonight because the winner (national leader Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech, 15:32.09) was gone and the third-place runner was 13 seconds behind Katie. It was a nice effort, and I am very proud of her PR and provisional time.”
Tennessee also placed three in the finals of the 60m dash, with senior Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas) charting the top effort in fifth with a provisional readout of 7.28. Freshman Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.) was ninth with a non-altitude career-best provisional of 7.34, while sophomore Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) matched her PR with a provisional of 7.37 to wind up 11th.
“Cleo and Lynne are showing consistency with their times in the 60 meters,” Clark said. “It also was very nice to see Jeneba run a non-altitude PR and provisional tonight. We are continuing forward in a very strong way.”
In the weight throw, senior Shanna Dickenson cranked out her second longest effort of the campaign in the weight throw. The Cincinnati, Ohio, product stretched the tape measure to 63 feet, 4 3/4 inches to meet the NCAA provisional standard for the third time in five meets this season. She was about three feet shy of the victorious mark on Friday.
Junior Rolanda Bell (Laurelton, N.Y.) turned in a third-place finish in the championship division of the mile. Her 4:50.20 readout was a career best by more than three seconds and moved her to 13th on UT’s all-time performers list in that event. Running in the Olympic Development division of the mile, meanwhile, freshman Brittany Sheffey (Bellport, N.Y.) came out of her race with a ninth-place result of 4:59.61.
In the 400 meters, senior LaTonya Loche (Bastrop, La.) continued to improve her NCAA provisional stock, recording a season-best time of 53.75 to wind up 14th. The mark was her fastest regular-season open quarter since her rookie season of 2005.
Junior Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) competed in a pair of events on Friday and didn’t fair as well as she would have liked. After logging an 8.50 clocking that left her 21st in the 60m hurdles, she was unable to land a measurable mark in the long jump.
Later Friday night, two more Lady Vols are slated to compete during the invitational session, which will be televised Sunday by ESPN from 5-7 p.m. Senior Courtney Champion (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is slated to run in the 60m and 200m finals at 10:05 and 10:40 p.m. Eastern Time, while junior Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) is scheduled to be in the mile final at 10:25 ET.
