DMR Members named LV Athletes of the Week

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After winning a national title at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., last weekend, the members of the UT distance medley relay team have been named the Lady Vol Athletes of the Week, as voted by the women’s media relations staff.

The foursome of freshman Brittany Sheffey (Bellport, N.Y.), freshman Brittany Jones (Pompano Beach, Fla.), sophomore Phoebe Wright (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and junior Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.) carried the baton to victory on March 14, setting a school record in the process.  Their clocking of 11:01.97 delivered Tennessee its second-ever NCAA title in that event and provided the Big Orange 10 crucial points on its way toward a tie for eighth in the final team standings with 19 points.

The 2008 UT tandem overtook the previous school best from the 2004 quartet of Brooke Novak, Dee Dee Trotter, Nicole Cook and Lindsay Hyatt, who checked in first at the 2004 Penn State National in 11:03.42.  This year’s NCAA DMR championship also was the second in Lady Vol annals, following in the previous group’s footsteps at the 2004 NCAA meet.  They ran 11:06.07 in Fayetteville that season to get the job done.

In six seasons with J.J. Clark at the helm, UT has recorded NCAA Indoor DMR finishes of first in 2004, seventh in 2005, 10th in 2006, second in 2007 and first in 2008. They had no entry in 2003.
