KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women's track & field team, fresh off winning the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 13-14, will open the outdoor portion of its 2009 schedule this weekend. Head coach J.J. Clark's squad will split up to do so, sending the bulk of the team to Atlanta for the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech and select members of the distance corps to California for the Stanford Invitational.

"It's a process where you have to enjoy the results of the indoor season, which is now over, and then kind of reboot for the outdoor schedule," Clark said. "There's good energy as we make that transition, but you don't want to be too rah-rah in the first meet. It's the beginning of the second half of the season, and you have to get the ball rolling."

The Lady Vols will do just that on Friday and Saturday, as they compete at Georgia Tech's George C. Griffin Track and Stanford's Cobb Track at Angell Field. Live results links for each meet can be found at www.utladyvols.com.

In Atlanta, action begins on Friday evening with only the hammer throw being contested. All-Americans Annie Alexander, Celriece Law and Lynne Layne headline a full slate of activities on Saturday. Alexander, who finished third at NCAA Indoors with a school-record-tying toss of 57-2 in the shot put, will take part in both the shot and discus. She was the SEC champion outdoors in those events as a freshman in 2008.

Law, the NCAA Indoor 60m hurdles runner-up two weekends ago in a school-record time of 8.04, has the 100m hurdles among her list of events at the Yellow Jacket meet. She was seventh at NCAA Outdoors in that event a year ago and had a wind-aided 2008 season best of 13.23 and a legal mark of 13.31. Layne, meanwhile, is slated to run the 100 and 200 meters, among other events. She was the SEC Indoor runner-up in the 60m and 200m dashes this season and placed ninth a year ago at outdoor nationals in the 100.

Out on the West Coast, NCAA Indoor stars Sarah Bowman, Chanelle Price and Phoebe Wright will be in action, as will fellow distance stalwarts Jackie Areson, Rolanda Bell and Katie Van Horn. Bowman won the NCAA Indoor mile in a meet-record time of 4:29.72 and joined Price, Wright and Brittany Jones in setting a world record in the distance medley relay with a victorious time of 10:50.98.

Late Friday night events at Stanford include the 1500, 5000 and 10000 meters. Bell is a possibility to run the 1500m with Price and Wright or tackle the 5K. Areson, Bowman and Van Horn are slated for the 5K as well, with Van Horn possibly taking on the 10K instead at Clark's guidance. The 800 meters will be contested on Saturday afternoon, with Wright, Bowman, Price and Bell entered.

"We just want to go to each of these sites and get some qualifying marks for regionals and get the team going," Clark said. "There are some people who have not competed yet this season (javelin, other throws events), and we need to get them started and get stronger as the season goes along. We're just excited to go.

"We're splitting the team up, just because it is better for the program. We have some people we want to run the 5K and possibly 10K, and it's better to do that at Stanford. We need to do some throwing, sprinting and jumping, and the best place for that is at Georgia Tech. We're splitting up this weekend to maximize the potential performance of our athletes by going to venues that traditionally are known for being very good in certain areas."
