KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Annie Alexander, a sophomore thrower on the track & field team, has been named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week. She earned the distinction based on her performance at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville on April 3-4, where she charted two marks that qualified her for the NCAA Mideast Regional meet in Louisville, Ky., on May 29-30.
Making her first appearance of the 2009 outdoor season, Alexander won the discus throw competition with a heave of 173 feet, four inches at Florida's Percy Beard Track. That measurement ranks No. 1 in the Southeastern Conference this season and third nationally. She now has won 10 of 14 discus competitions during her college career.
The product of Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, came back later in the day on Saturday to finish third overall and second among collegians in the shot put. Her effort of 56-0 places her second in the NCAA and SEC thus far for the 2009 outdoor campaign.
Alexander and her teammates will make their first home appearance of the year, April 8-11, as they play host to the Sea Ray Relays at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. Alexander is a probable entry in the invitational discus at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday and the shot put at 2:30 p.m.
