Ellen Wortham set a Sea Ray Relays record in the 400m hurdles.
April 17, 2012
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- After winning the 400-meter hurdles for the third-straight time at the Sea Ray Relays and being named the MVP for running events at the meet for the second year in a row, Tennessee senior Ellen Wortham was named the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Women's Runner of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Wortham, a product of Maryville High School, dominated the field in the Showcase section of the 400 hurdles on Saturday afternoon, winning by three seconds in a season-best time of 55.93. That mark is the best in the NCAA thus far in 2012 and matched the meet record set by South Carolina's Tiffany Ross-Williams in 2005.
On the same day she was recognized among Tennessee's 23 outgoing men's and women's athletes on Senior Day, Wortham also added a victory in the long jump. She matched the longest leap of her career outdoors, stretching the tape measure to 19-11 3/4 with a 2.5 wind at her back.
She later closed the meet by running the opening leg on the Lady Vols' Showcase 4x400m relay, joining with Martinique Octave, Ashley Harris and Kianna Ruff for a victorious clocking of 3:39.37. That effort cemented Wortham's status as the winner of the Tony Wilson Award for Women's Running Events for the second-consecutive year.
While she currently is scheduled to have the weekend off from competition, some of Wortham's teammates will be in Nashville on Friday and Saturday, as the Lady Vols and Vols take part in the Vanderbilt Invitational.
