NASHVILLE -- On a wet and windy day in Music City, the 16th-ranked University of Tennessee women’s track & field team managed to overcome the elements and produce a pair of runner-up finishes and two more NCAA regional qualifiers Friday at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
UT ran its total of NCAA regional qualifiers to 12 athletes who have made the cut for 17 scoring opportunities in 11 different events, after both freshman Brittany Sheffey (Bellport, N.Y.) and junior Rolanda Bell (Laurelton, N.Y.) dipped below the standard of four minutes, 27.80 seconds in the 1500 meters. Following the lead of three-time defending U.S. 1500m champ Treniere Clement, who won the race in 4:22.61, Sheffey crossed the line second in a career-best 4:24.60, while Bell was third at 4:26.25. Along with teammate Sarah Bowman (Warrenton, Va.), who ranks number one in the nation in the 1500m, Sheffey and Bell give UT three entries in the Mideast Regional meet in that event.
While she was competing in an event that isn’t contested outdoors at the NCAA and SEC meets, UT sophomore Jackie Areson (Delray Beach, Fla.) did manage Tennessee’s other runner-up outcome on the day. Her personal-record time of 9:58.48 left her just over seven seconds behind Vandy’s Rita Jorgensen, who won in 9:51.27.
Freshman Holly Kane (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior Amara McKell (Nashville, Tenn.) posted the Big Orange’s top field event efforts of the day. In the opening event of the meet for women, Kane launched a best toss of 123-11 to wind up fourth in the javelin throw. McKell, meanwhile, returned to her hometown and blasted a PR of 44 feet even to snag ninth in the shot put. Results for the long jump were being held until Saturday, as the event was being contested in driving rains.
In the only other event involving Lady Vols, five orange-clads ran in the 200m dash. Freshman Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.) and sophomore Lynne Layne (New Rochelle, N.Y.) presented the top finishes of the competition for Tennessee, taking fifth and sixth, respectively, in regional times of 23.72 and 23.75. Both marks were wind-legal but not improvements. Junior Celriece Law (Denver, Colo.) was 14th with a wind-aided readout of 24.63, while senior Cleo Tyson (Huntsville, Texas) was unable to make a splash in her individual season debut, crossing the line 26th in a windy 25.19.
The Lady Vols return to action on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Central Time, when senior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) competes in the hammer throw. In all Tennessee will have athletes competing in 10 different events on the final day, with action expected to wrap up around 4 p.m. CT.
