Alexander Given Lady Vol Honors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After winning a pair of events at the Georgia Invitational on Friday, University of Tennessee freshman Annie Alexander was named Monday as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week, as voted by the UT women’s media relations staff.

Alexander, who hails from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, claimed victory in both the discus throw and shot put at the University of Georgia’s Spec Towns Track.  Those performances earned the phenomenal rookie her third Lady Vol Athlete of the Week nod of her stellar rookie campaign.  She previously won on Jan. 15 and April 15.

The Lady Vol standout won the Ga. Inv. discus competition with a fling of 179 feet, 4 inches to collect her fifth victory in that event in seven meets during the outdoor slate.  The mark, which qualifies her for the NCAA Mideast Regional meet, ranks her eighth nationally and No. 1 in the SEC this season.

In the shot put, Alexander cranked out a toss of 51-10 to take the title in Athens.   While she had previously finished second to pro athletes and had been the top collegiate finisher, this was her initial outdoor shot title of 2008.  The rookie is UT’s all-time record-holder in the event at 57-2 indoors and 57-3 outside.

Alexander and her Big Orange cohorts will return to action beginning on Thursday, as the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships get underway at Auburn’s Hutsell-Rosen Track.  Alexander was the league champion during the indoor season.
