NEW ORLEANS -- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its list of USTFCCCA All-America distinctions Tuesday for the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field season. Tennessee's women's and men's teams combined to produce 14 All-Americans who earned 18 total honors.
After having 10 student-athletes honored indoors, the Big Orange programs improved that number during the outdoor campaign, producing eight first-team selections, seven second-team honorees and three honorable mention choices. One of UT's All-Americans, senior Ellen Wortham, earned both first- and second-team accolades.
Making the women's USTFCCCA First Team for Tennessee were seniors Annie Alexander (shot put, discus throw), Chanelle Price (800m) and Ellen Wortham (400mH). Sophomore Chase Brannon (pole vault) as well as the 4x100m relay lineup of junior Reggie Juin, freshman Jamol James, sophomore Jarael Nelvis and junior Arnez Hardnick drew first-team accolades on the men's side.
Second-team Lady Vol honorees included senior Brittany Jones in the 200m dash, the 4x100m combination of senior Ashley Harris, Jones and juniors Martinique Octave and Kia Jackson, and the 4x400m relay lineup of Wortham, sophomore Kianna Ruff, junior Nijgia Snapp and Octave.
Honors are awarded for performances at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which were held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
First-team USTFCCCA All-America honors are awarded to those who earn any portion of a team point at the national championships or reach an eight-entrant final. Second-team All-America honors are handed out to those whose final placing in the national meet ranges from ninth to 16th. Those who participated at the final site but did not place in the meet's top 16 are listed as honorable mention.
