KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Sarah Bowman walked away with four awards, and Annie Alexander snared three of her own Monday night, as the University of Tennessee women's track & field team celebrated its 2008 season with a banquet at the Courtside Club at UT's Thompson-Boling Arena.

For the second straight season, Bowman claimed Lady Vol Most Valuable Performer distinction. This time, the Warrenton, Va., native also added the Ilrey Oliver Sparks Memorial Competitive Award as well as MVP honors for both indoor and outdoor track & field during her junior campaign. She did so after earning All-America honors in the mile and distance medley relay indoors and the 1500m outdoors. Among her accomplishments were NCAA and SEC titles in the DMR, SEC titles in the mile and 3K indoors and 1500m outdoors, and school records in the DMR and 1500m.

Alexander, from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, was named Most Valuable Freshman Outdoors and swept both Most Valuable Performer for Field Events awards, indoors and out. She earned that recognition by winning a trio of SEC titles, becoming the first rookie in conference history to sweep the indoor and outdoor shot put competitions and adding the discus throw crown to boot. She also added an NCAA Mideast Region victory in the discus. In the process, she broke UT's indoor and outdoor records in the shot and twice broke the Trinidad & Tobago national record in the discus.

Grabbing Most Valuable Freshman acclaim for the indoor season were a pair of Lady Vols, both of them named Brittany. Brittany Jones of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Brittany Sheffey of Bellport, N.Y., played instrumental roles as rookies, running legs on UT's NCAA champion and school-record-setting DMR unit. Jones handled the 400m leg, while Sheffey opened with the 1200m hitch. Additionally, Sheffey ran on UT's victorious SEC DMR unit and Jones handled a turn on the squad's 4x4 at the NCAA Indoor meet.

For her impressive sophomore campaign, former walk-on Phoebe Wright of Signal Mountain, Tenn., was presented Most Improved Awards for indoor and outdoor track. Wright was a member of UT's NCAA and SEC champion distance medley relay quartets and earned All-America acclaim in the DMR and 4x400m relay indoors and in the 800 meters outdoors.

Rounding out the awards were Jena' Murphy (Scholar Athlete Award), Cleo Tyson (Community Service Award), Lynne Layne (Coaches Award), Celriece Law (Coaches Award) and Brittany Jones (Lady Vol Spirit Award).

Also, there were recognitions for seniors, NCAA and SEC Champions and All-Americans. In their final year of performing for UT are Rolanda Bell, Bowman, Alicia Essex, Law, Kimarra McDonald, Leah Soro and Katie Van Horn.

NCAA Champions were Bowman, Jones, Sheffey and Wright for the DMR. All-Americans included Bowman, Courtney Champion, Jones, Law, Layne, LaTonya Loche, McDonald, Sheffey, Jeneba Tarmoh, Tyson and Wright. The SEC Champions were Alexander, Bowman, Champion, McDonald, Sheffey and Wright.
