KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

The University of Tennessee volleyball team opened up the Toyota Knoxville Lady Vol Classic with a 3-0 (30-26, 30-22, 30-24) win over Cal State Fullerton on Friday night. The Lady Vols improve to 6-1 this season with their fifth straight victory, while CSF falls to 5-4. UT out-hit the Titans .313 to .183, out-dug them 56-44 and registered 58 kills compared to Fullerton's 36. For the second consecutive match, The Big Orange did not trail at any point of any game.

Freshman MB Sarah Blum led the way for Tennessee, recording 17 kills with a .484 hitting percentage. Sophomore MB Kristen Andre was not far behind, notching 15 kills along with a .519 hitting percentage. Sophomore Julie Knytych divvied out 46 assists to the Lady Vol hitters, while recording seven digs and four kill of her own. Leading the way in UT's strong defensive effort, sophomore libero Jasmine Fullove provided a match-high 16 digs.

"I was very happy with how our team played having a different lineup tonight," UT Head Coach Rob Patrick said. "With Jen Rudy and Michelle Piantadosi out because of injury, the rest of the team was able to make for the absence by picking up their game to a higher level. We passed very well today, which in turn, allowed us to get the ball to our middle hitters very effectively. Sarah Blum, Kristen Andre and Heather Harrington hit very consistently and Julie Knytych did a great job of distributing the ball around."

Tennessee jumped out to a 1-0 lead and never trailed en route to winning game one by a count of 30-26. Andre and junior Whitney Gifford registered five kills each, while Knytych gave out 16 assists. Fullove made it tough for the Titan hitters to put the ball away, as she registered eight digs in the first game.

The Lady Vols again did not trail at any point in game two, this time posting a 30-22 win. Blum looked to be almost unstoppable, putting away nine kills on just 13 attempts for a .615 percentage, while Knytych again dished out 16 helpers. Again leading the way for UT's defense, Fullove recorded seven digs.

Game three was nearly the same story as the first two, with the Orange and White claiming a 30-24 victory to seal the match. Andre had the hot hand for UT this time, throwing down seven kills in just nine attempts for a .778 hitting percentage.

In the tournament's other match on Friday, Michigan put away East Tennessee State, 3-0. Competition will continue at the Toyota Knoxville Lady Vol Classic on Saturday as Tennessee takes on ETSU at 1 p.m., then battles the Wolverines at 7 p.m. UM and CSF will clash at 11 a.m., while ETSU takes on the Titans at 5 p.m. in the event's other Saturday matches.
