KNOXVILLE, Tenn -- UT fell to Georgia Tech, 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 22-25) on Friday evening at Thompson-Boling Arena on the opening night of the Tennessee Invitational.
Ellen Mullins led the Lady Vols with 20 digs and two assists. The senior has scooped up 20 or more digs in nine of UT's 12 games this season.
Freshmen duo of Jamie Lea and Ashley Mariani chimed in with eight kills apiece. Sophomore setter Lexi Dempsey dished out 14 assists for the Lady Vols, while freshman Abby Brewer handed out 10 helpers.
"I'm disappointed in our play today and that our practices this week didn't carry over to this match," head coach Rob Patrick said. "We just made too many errors."
Tennessee took an early lead in the first set before Georgia Tech tied it 7-7. The Ramblin' Wreck overtook the lead, but the Lady Vols tied it back up 9-9 with a service ace from Lea, followed by a kill from senior Whitney Heeres and another from freshman Raina Hembry. Georgia Tech overtook the lead and went on to win the opening game, 25-18.
Errors plagued the Lady Vols in the second and third set as the Yellowjackets went on to win the sets, 25-21 and 25-22, respectively.
The Orange & White will take on Jacksonville State Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. followed by a nightcap with Coastal Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
In the first game of the tournament, Coastal Carolina defeated Jacksonville State, 3-0.
