Courtside Chat with Ellen Mullins

Aug. 9, 2010

ROB PATRICK ON MULLINS: "Ellen is going to bring a tremendous amount of energy to our program. She is a very strong, skilled player who has set and hit in both club and high school. Although she will play more of a defensive specialist role here at Tennessee, her volleyball IQ is extremely high because she has played a number of positions. She is going to push for a lot of playing time early in her career and we will put her right in the mix for the libero position. Once she becomes comfortable with her defensive responsibilities, she will be a tremendous asset for us."

HIGH SCHOOL/CLUB: Spent her prep career at Father Ryan High School in Nashville where she became the first player in school history to start every match for four consecutive seasons while leading the Lady Irish to the state championships each year and earning team MVP honors in both 2008 and 2009...A four-time all-state and all-region performer, she also earned numerous honors from PrepVolleyball.com, claiming "Highest Honorable Mention" All-American status and being named to the Senior Top 150 list in 2009...Was also a part of the web site's "Defensive Dandies" list from 2006-09...Was a finalist for the Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009...Named the "Libero of the Year' by The Tennessean in 2007 and was a four-time All-Midstate honoree by the newspaper from 2006-09 as well...Was also a standout in the classroom at Father Ryan High School where she claimed a spot on the honor roll each semester for four years...Participated on the Nashville One and Impact Volleyball Club teams during her prep years...Helped the Nashville One squad qualify for the USA Volleyball (USAV) Junior Olympics in April of 2009, while Impact VBC earned a spot at the national tournament each year from 2003-08, winning the competition in both 2006 and 2008.

PERSONAL: Plans major in business...Lists her hobbies outside of volleyball as swimming, cooking and spending time with her first niece...Names her mom as her biggest sports influence because she was a great basketball player...Models herself athletically after her sister Ann because they play the same position and she has taught her how to work hard and improve her game...Is quite familiar with the University of Tennessee as her father, Steve, attended school in Knoxville from 1975-79, while her sister, Ann, 24, was a member of the Lady Vol volleyball team in both 2003 and 2004 before transferring to Lipscomb where she was named Atlantic Sun Libero of the Year in 2005 and earned first team all-conference honors in 2006...Also has a sister, Marie, 19, that is currently a setter for Austin Peay...Has two other sisters as well, Lynne, 26, and Maggie, 13...Chose to attend Tennessee over offers from Lipscomb, Mississippi State and Middle Tennessee State...Former teammates playing college volleyball include Nicole Smith (Notre Dame), Emily Teegarden (Western Kentucky), Alison Woods (UAB), Sam Serley (UAB), Dani Howe (East Tennessee), Angelle Hayes (Carson Newman), Brittany Eller (Trevecca) and Kristen Sharp (Maryville)...Ellen Patricia Mullins, the daughter of Steve and Sarah Mullins, was born on Nov. 22, 1991, in Nashville, Tenn.
