The University of Tennessee Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is encouraging fans to donate food for the Southeastern Conference's Together We "CAN" Food Drive, which will take place through Sept. 27. The food collected will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee.
"The food drive is a great way for the entire SEC community to rally together to collect money and canned food for all of our communities," said Ginny Brown, senior Lady Vol golfer and Tennessee Student-Athlete Advisory Committee secretary.
Tennessee fans will have two chances to donate at sporting events. Fans who bring two cans to the Sept. 25 or 27 volleyball matches will receive free admission to that day's match. The match on Sept. 25 is against Arkansas at 7:00 p.m. The match on Sept. 27 is against Ole Miss at 5:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU. Student-athletes will also be collecting donations and food outside of the Thornton Athletics Student Life Center on Sept. 26 before the Ohio football game.
The SEC Together We "CAN" Food drive was established in 2007 and is organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committees of the Southeastern Conference. Each SEC school will participate in the drive with donations from each school benefiting their local food banks. Last year, Tennessee raised more than 102,000 pounds.
The Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee helps to eliminate hunger in 18 counties throughout East Tennessee by providing food, services and education to address the nutritional needs of all people at-risk for hunger. For more information visit http://www.secondharvestknox.org/.
