Q&A WITH VOLLEYBALL'S JOSELYN JOHNSON

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Junior middle blocker Joselyn Johnson recently took time to answer a few questions about the University of Tennessee volleyball team. The native of Muncie, Ind., has seen action in 10 matches and 18 games this year. She has averaged nearly a kill and block per game with a total of 14 in each category.

The Lady Vols are set to host a pair of SEC matches this weekend as South Carolina will head to Knoxville for a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Oct. 6, and Georgia will take on the Big Orange at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8.

How has the program developed into a national contender since you have been here?

"With our program getting better and better every year, we have started to hold ourselves to higher standards and have higher expectations as a team."

Which teammate has been the biggest surprise so far this season?

"Leah Hinkey has come in as a freshman and played extremely well for us this year."

How has your game changed since coming to Tennessee?

"I am much more coachable. I am also much stronger, both physically and mentally."

What do you do to get pumped for a match?

"I listen to my favorite artist, Lil Jon, or any crunk or snap music."

Who has most influenced you athletic career?

"Professionally, Serena Williams has had the most influence. In college, it has been Michelle Piantadosi."

How has the team dynamic changed from 2005 to 2006?

"Our team is much more cohesive this year."

What has been your favorite trip since coming to Rocky Top?

"I really enjoyed playing at Southern California in our trip to Los Angeles earlier this season."

How do you think your experiences playing volleyball will influence you after graduation?

"I have developed really good leadership skills and know how to work in a team sitaution. I am also able to stay focused on what needs to be done and I pay attention to the little details."

Your brother is a junior wide receiver on the Ball State football team. What advice did you give him when he was being recruited out of high school?

"I just told him to stay focused, keep his mind right and keep his grades up. I also told him that `He can do all things through Christ who strengthens him.' (Philippians 4:13)"

What is your favorite memory since coming to Rocky Top?

"Beating Florida both at home and at their house in the SEC Championship in 2004."

What is the team doing to prepare for this weekend's SEC match-ups?

"We spend time talking to Joe Whitney, our sport psychologist, about staying focused as conference matches are the most important for us."

What will the team have to do to be successful this weekend?

"We need to stay focused, start fast and finish strong!"
