NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Freshman Amber Zimmerman was the only freshman in action for the University of Tennessee women's cross country team at Friday's Belmont-VU Opener. The rookie from Knoxville didn't let her youth and inexperience at the college level prevent her from moving to the front of the Big Orange pack, as she led her squad to the finish line and placed 35th in her first race as a Lady Vol.

A product of Webb School, Zimmerman ran the 4,000-meter trail in 15 minutes, 25.47 seconds to wind up 35th overall but count 32nd in terms of scoring. Her effort helped Tennessee place seventh out of 12 teams with 201 points. Vanderbilt easily took top honors with 27 points, followed by Western Kentucky (59) and Alabama (65).

With J.J. Clark sitting veterans Brittany Sheffey and Chanelle Price, as well as the rest of his newcomers, Tennessee's next finisher was junior Elizabeth Tiller in 44th position (34th scorer) at 15:37.09. Also among the top five were sophomores Ramzee Fondren (48th [37th], 15:41.45), Ally Colvin (62nd [45th], 15:57.55) and Andrea Ferri (80th [53rd], 16:23.85).

Running but not scoring were senior Kim White (100th [63rd], 18:03.96) and sophomore Chelsea Knotts (101st [64th], 18:11.41).

"It's an early meet, and we have a good ways to go," Clark said. "Today is a starting point, and we have to move forward from here.

"It was Amber's first meet in a Tennessee uniform. She's a freshman and she led our group today. That's a positive note and a nice start for her."

The Lady Vols are back in action on Sept. 18, when they return to Nashville for the Commodore Classic at the same venue. Race time for the 5K women's competition is 10 a.m. Central Time.
