UT's Brooke Novak finished second and charted a school course record today.
Sept. 12, 2003
University of Tennessee junior Brooke Novak ran to a second-place finish and charted a school course record Friday evening as the Lady Vols finished third at the season-opening Tennessee/adidas Cross Country Invitational at Lambert Acres Golf Club. Cranking out a time of 17:39.20 on the hilly 5000-meter course, the Kaukauna, Wis., native posted the best 5K clocking by a UT woman at that venue since the team began competing on it in 1998. Sharon Dickie, who graduated last season, previously held the record at 17:41.65, which she produced at the 1998 Southeastern Conference Championships meet.
Novak's effort, however, wasn't enough to spur the Big Orange to victory, as No. 14 North Carolina State and No. 23 Wisconsin proved too strong for the home team at this point in the season. The perennial NCAA distance powers finished one-two with totals of 28 and 39 points, respectively, while unranked Tennessee took third with 60. N.C. State, which bunched its five scoring runners into first, fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth places, was led by individual champion Kristin Price, the fourth-place finisher at the 2001 NCAA meet. Her 17:15.68 effort rated as the fourth-fastest pace ever run on the 5K trail at Lambert Acres.
"Overall, it was a good start for us," second-year UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. "We knew going in what we were up against, so in that respect I thought we ran very competitively. I look for us to make progress as a group as we continue to improve our fitness levels and packing."
Novak received scoring assistance from sophomores Carly Matthews (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Megan Cauble (Knoxville, Tenn.) in 11th
and 12th, respectively, at 18:04.08 and 18:04.99, as well as junior Elizabeth McCalley (Knoxville, Tenn.) in 18th at 18:30.17 and senior
Jessica Southers (Ashland, Ky.) in 19th at 18:44.48. Other Lady Vol finishers included sophomore Mindy Sullivan (Lubbock, Texas) in
22nd at 18:58.54 and Rachel Zamata (Henderson, Tenn.) in 26th at 19:42.16.
"Brooke getting the school course record was obviously a plus," Clark said. "It is a great indicator of what she is capable of doing down the road. Carly definitely came in and made an impact in her first race as a Lady Vol, and Megan dropped about a minute-and-a-half off her time from a year ago at this meet, which is a really strong showing."
It should be noted that Clark opted to hold out seniors Christy Baird (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Lindsay Hyatt (Auburn, Calif.), sophomore Felicia Guliford (Gallup, N.M.) and redshirt freshman Katie Flaute (Dayton, Ohio) in favor of continued training. Guliford was an All-South Region performer as a rookie, Baird was a 20th-place SEC finisher in 2001 and Hyatt is a transfer from Stanford who contributed to both the cross country and track & field programs for the Cardinal the past three seasons before coming to UT to attend graduate school. With that quartet expected to make its debut, the Lady Volunteers return to action next Friday, as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete in the 5K Crimson Classic Invitational at Harry Pritchett Golf Course. Race time is 6 p.m. Eastern.
