KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After leading the 14th-ranked University of Tennessee women's cross country team to its third straight Tennessee Invitational title on Sept. 15, senior Felicia Guliford was named the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week Monday in a vote by the UT Women's Media Relations staff. Other nominees included golf's Marci Turner, soccer's Jaimel Johnson and volleyball's Chelsea Noble.
A product of Gallup, N.M., Guliford raced to a third-place individual finish in her first regular-season home appearance since her rookie year of 2002. She charted a time of 18 minutes, 13 seconds on the newly-designed 5000-meter layout at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville, Tenn., leading the Big Orange women to the finish line for the fourth time in her last four outings.
The three-time All-South Region performer and two-time All-SEC selection paced a UT squad that accumulated 28 points to defeat runner-up Georgia Tech (77) as well as nine other teams last Friday evening in UT's 2006 home-opener. Guliford set the tone for a Tennessee unit that flexed its depth and talent with a differential of only 39 seconds between its first and seventh runners. Head Coach J.J. Clark's squad now possesses a 20-1 won-lost record on the young season.
For Guliford, it was her first Lady Vol Athlete of the Week recognition since being named LVAOTW on Nov. 16, 2005, and the third overall selection of her career. Her first award came on Nov. 2, 2004.
Guliford and her teammates will be back in action on Sept. 29, as they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., and Lehigh University for the Paul Short Run. Race time for the 6000-meter affair is 2:45 p.m. Eastern Time.
