University of Tennessee junior Brooke Novak has been named Southeastern Conference Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week for her efforts in Saturday's Penn State National Meet. It marks the first time this season and the second occasion in her three-year career that she has been so honored.
Novak, from Kaukauna, Wis., turned in the best race of her collegiate days in the 6K PSU event, charting a sixth-place effort of 20:58.21 on the rain-soaked Blue/White Golf Course on Saturday. What made the performance even more special was that she placed so high while running against four other teams ranked in the nation's top 20. Her work enabled No. 28 Tennessee to finish fifth of 19 schools in a field that also included No. 9 Columbia, No. 10 Providence, No. 18 Penn State and No. 20 Colorado State.
Running in three races for the Big Orange this season, Novak has now paced the pack in two of them and run second in the other. With the honor, she joins UT sophomore Megan Cauble, who was honored by the SEC following her performance at the Crimson Classic Invitational on Sept. 19. Novak and Cauble have helped Coach J.J. Clark's Lady Vols to a 57-8 record this season in four competitions.
Novak had previously been honored by the conference in 2001, when she opened her college running career with a victory in the Mountaineer Open at Boone, N.C. Next up for Novak and company, a trip to Athens, Ga., on Nov. 3 for the SEC Championships. The meet will be held at the UGA Golf Course at 10 a.m.
