The Tennessee men's tennis team's run ended at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships Friday, as both doubles teams failed to advance.
"Coach Woodruff and I are proud of the guys for their good performance in Tulsa," head coach Chris Mahony said. "As a team we picked up 11 wins over ranked opponents in the event, so we can take a lot of confidence from that. We have steadily built good momentum this fall that we are looking to carry over into next weekend's events in Knoxville and Mansfield, Texas.
Bobby Cameron and Kaden Hensel advanced to the quarterfinals of doubles competition. The UT duo won five consecutive matches in the tournament, including three wins over ranked opponents. The tandem defeated Boise State's Clancy and Luke Shields 8-6 in the second round. Cameron and Hensel fell to Markus Dickhardt and Chris Groh of San Diego State in the quarterfinals. The UT juniors are 10-3 this season with six wins over ranked opponents.
Tennessee's Adam Hubble and Ben Rogers, ranked 10th in the preseason doubles poll, fell to North Carolina's Lenny Gullan and David Stone in the second round, 8-6.
Hensel was magnificent throughout the tournament. The junior from Mudgeeraba, Australia, won four straight matches in the singles portion, including three wins over ranked opponents to advance to the second round of the main draw. In doubles, Hensel and Cameron won five straight matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw.
"This was obviously a breakthrough tournament for Kaden," Mahony said. "He was a combined 9-2 in singles and doubles in Tulsa, which was an impressive performance."
The team returns to action Friday when it hosts the first-ever Volunteer State Challenge.
