Tennessee men's head tennis coach Sam Winterbotham announced Tuesday that transfer Matt Brewer will join the UT tennis team in January.
"We are extremely excited about Matt joining our program," Winterbotham said. "He is a young man of great character and ambition. Matt is going to be a valued member of this team and (Associate head coach) Chris (Woodruff) and I look forward to developing his talents. Matt was very highly recruited by the top teams in the nation, so when Matt chose UT over top-five programs it shows how much pride he has in representing The University of Tennessee and also how much belief he has in our program.
"We are so proud that the best players in Tennessee want to stay in Tennessee. With the great young talent being developed in state we hope this will be one of many great in-state signings."
Brewer began his college career at the University of Memphis. Brewer faced his future Vol teammates last February when UT and the Tigers faced off in a dual-match won by Tennessee. Brewer played No. 1 singles for Memphis in the match. The former Memphis Tiger was highly recruited coming out of high school. Brewer ended 2005 ranked as the No. 3 player in the South and the No. 1 player in Tennessee. He also finished ninth in the U.S. in Boys 18 and under.
The future Vol cited the coaches, players and the community in Knoxville being so supportive of UT athletes as the reason he chose to come to Tennessee.
Brewer is the son of Nanette Brewer and Peter Brewer. His family lived in Knoxville from 1996-2000 and Brewer has been coached by former UT player Chad Copenhaver (1995-96, 98-99).
Brewer and the rest of the Volunteers begin the spring season Jan. 19 in New Orleans at the SEC Men's Coaches Indoor Championships.
