With the holiday season in full-swing, the University of Tennessee Athletic Department volunteered to support the Lift Up America program by organizing an area food agency pick up on the University of Tennessee campus. The event took place in the S7 parking lot across from the Tennessee Boathouse on Neyland Drive Thursday, December 7.
Student-athletes from both men's and women's athletics loaded 30,000 pounds of Tyson chicken and 4,000 Interstate batteries on to area food agencies' trucks.
The battery and food donation is part of a nationwide community service effort called Lift Up America. Lift Up America joins several corporations with professional and college sports teams to encourage people to lend a helping hand to others in need. This is UT's second year participating in Lift Up America's efforts.
"We are thrilled about the partnership and team spirit between these great organizations," said Dave Hannah, CEO of Lift Up America. "It is truly inspirational to see so many entities coming together with such a noble goal in mind."
A series of more than 30 Lift Up America events will occur in major cities across the nation during the week of December 3, 2006. Lift Up America will distribute food, prescription eyewear, hearing aids and alkaline batteries to less fortunate families. Thirty or more sports teams will partner with Lift Up America to bring these gifts to different cities including a growing number of teams from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS and NCAA.
