Tennessee men's tennis player Kaden Hensel defeated teammate Adam Hubble 7-6(7), 6-2 Thursday to win the Southern Intercollegiate Division II Singles Championship.
"I was so proud of Adam and Kaden for both reaching the final," head coach Chris Mahony said. "Unfortunately, today I knew that one of our guys was going to have to lose and probably be disappointed, but at the end of the day they both had great tournaments.
"Throughout this tournament, I believe Adam showed everybody the improvement he has made over the summer break. He worked extremely hard on his agility and on a few technical aspects of his game, and these improvements are evident in his results.
"Kaden had a great tournament. Anytime you win an entire event, the confidence you take from it is enormous. I am so happy for Kaden just to see him back on the court and healthy again after battling mono for several months. He is still a few tournaments away from playing at full fitness, but I am looking forward to more great tennis from him next weekend at MTSU."
This is Hensel's first singles tournament title. In the fall of 2005, Hensel teamed up with Bobby Cameron to win the doubles flight of the UNLV Fall Classic.
The tennis team is back in action next weekend when the squad will play in two in-state tournaments. Six members of the team will travel to Murfreesboro for the MTSU Fall Classic while the three remaining players will go to Chattanooga for the Steve Baras Fall Classic.
