Tennis Duo One Win Away From Main Draw

Tennessee men's tennis players Davey Sandgren and J.P. Smith won twice Tuesday to advance to the third and final round of doubles qualifying at the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships played in Tulsa, Okla.
The UT tandem started the day with a 9-8 win over 47th-ranked Damon Gooch and Mason Schermerhorn of Elon in the first round. In the second round, Sandgren and Smith defeated Duke's Reid Carleton and Kiril Dimitrov 8-5.
Sandgren and Smith need to win one more match Wednesday to advance to the 32-team Main Draw.
Smith fell in his attempt to qualify for the singles Main Draw dropping his second round match to 118th-ranked Ed Corrie of Texas 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Sandgren, playing in the consolation bracket, retired his match after dropping the first set to Jakub Dybala of Montana State.
