19 Vols Graduate Saturday
December 15, 2007 | General
Nineteen former Vols representing five sports graduated from the University of Tennessee Saturday, continuing Tennessee athletics??? commitment to excellence in the classroom.
Among the graduates was football standout Jerod Mayo, who is earning his bachelor???s degree in 31/2 years. He plans to attend graduate school next year.
Also graduating Saturday were two former student-athletes ??? Cody Douglas and Maurice Staley ??? who returned to the university to finish their degrees through the Thornton Center???s Renewing Academic Commitment program. The RAC program works with former student-athletes by assisting them with advice on remaining degree requirements, course scheduling, tutoring, employment and internships opportunities offered through the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, as well as use of the Thornton Center for their everyday needs.
"I'm very proud of the student-athletes receiving their degrees this semester,??? said Eric Brey, director of the Thornton Center. ???They have worked hard off the field to earn their degree and now have earned the distinction of being University of Tennessee Alumni."
The 2007 Fall Commencement ceremonies were headlined by UT Board of Trustees member Spruell Driver.
There was a short reception for student-athletes, their families and their coaches at the Thornton Center.
