Tennessee sophomore tennis player Boris Conkic won in straight-sets Monday afternoon to advance to the second round of qualifying at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Conkic, ranked 55th in the ITA preseason poll, defeated Emanual Brighiu of TCU, 6-3, 7-6(3) in the first round to advance in qualifying. The UT sophomore faces Bradley Klahn of Stanford in the second round Tuesday. The Serbia native needs to defeat Klahn and then win in the third round on Wednesday to advance to the 64-man main draw. Conkic's teammate John-Patrick Smith is already in the main draw and does not need to go through the qualifying rounds.
Matteo Fago and Davey Sandgren could not join their teammate in the second round as both dropped their first round match. Fago fell to 111th-ranked Jonathan Wong of Columbia, 7-6, 6-1. Sandgren was defeated by North Carolina's Taylor Fogleman, 6-2, 6-2.
Fago, Sandgren and freshman Christian Hansen will play in the consolation singles bracket on Tuesday. Fago faces 83rd-ranked Andrea Carrasco of Arizona. Hansen battles 65th-ranked Omar Altmann of Pepperdine and Sandgren will play David Simson of Denver.
Fago and Conkic begin play Tuesday in the doubles qualifying tournament. The UT duo faces ETSU's Alex Ahlgren and Enrique Olivares in the first round. Sandgren and Smith are ranked 13th in the preseason ITA doubles poll and have earned an automatic bid into the doubles main draw that begins Thursday.
