Tennessee sophomore tennis player Boris Conkic won twice Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the 10th-annual Charles Fluitt Invitational played at the University of Kentucky's Boone Tennis Center.
Conkic began the day with a 6-1, 7-6, victory over Baylor's Jurica Grubisic. In the second round, Conkic again won a set tiebreaker to go up a set against Roy Kalmanovich of Illinois. The 98th-ranked Kalmanovich won the second set to force a third and final set. Conkic took control in the third set to advance to Sunday's semifinal with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory. The Serbia native faces second-ranked Denes Lukacs of Baylor in the semifinals. Conkic has a chance to play the nation's two top ranked singles players on Sunday. Oklahoma State's Oleksandr Nedovyesov, the top-ranked player in the country, is playing in the other semifinal.
Matt Brewer and Christian Hansen both fell one match short of the semifinals. Brewer came-from-behind to defeat Kentucky's Brad Cox in the first round, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2. The UT junior could not keep the momentum going in the second round though, as Brewer fell to Lukacs, 6-1, 6-2.
Hansen defeated Baylor's Julian Bley, 6-0, 7-6(4) to advance out of the first round but could not get past 19th-ranked Bruno Agostinelli of Kentucky as the UT freshman fell 6-1, 6-0.
Agostinelli advanced to the second round with a straight-set win over UT freshman Bryan Swartz.
Jeremy Tweedt forced a third-set against Kalmanovich in the first round but ran out of steam as the Illini netter rolled in the final set to advance. The UT sophomore rebounded in the consolation round to knock off Grubisic, 7-6, 7-6.
UT junior Davey Sandgren dropped both of his matches Saturday. In the main draw, the Tennessee native fell to Dennis Nevolo of Illinois, 6-1, 6-3. In the consolation draw, Sandgren battled Eric Quigley of Kentucky for three sets before falling just short of victory, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Sunday is the final day of the tournament as both semifinals and the final will be played.
