Renwick, Holmes Push Vols into First-Place Tie

Darren Renwick scored the round of his college career and David Holmes continued to shine as Tennessee drew even with Oregon State on Saturday at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough.
Renwick fired a bogey-free 67 to eclipse by two strokes his previous low set earlier this year at the Carpet Capital Collegiate. Only Mike Barry of Oregon State matched Renwick in Saturday's chilly conditions at The Ridges Golf and Country Club.
The Vols improved by seven strokes in Round 2, leading the field with an 8-under-par 280 to stand at 567 after 36 holes. Oregon State, which led Tennessee and Missouri by one heading into Saturday, shot 7-under 281 to also total 567. The Vols and Beavers are five strokes clear of third-place Virginia (572) and four more ahead of Missouri (576).
No other teams are at even par or better. East Tennessee State improved two positions to seventh at 581, while Auburn jumped one place to 13th at 591.
Holmes moved into a second-place tie on the individual leaderboard after Saturday's 68 carried him to 5-under-par 139 for the tournament. The Knoxville senior matched his teammate Renwick with five birdies for the day -- three on the front side -- but bogeyed the difficult 17th.
Three of Renwick's birdies came on the back nine, including both par fives. The sophomore sits in a five-way tie for fifth place at 3-under-par 141, five shots behind leader Diego Velasquez of Oregon State.
Junior Robin Wingardh recorded his second straight even-par 72 and is tied for 20th place at 144. Wingardh was 2 under at the turn -- birdies at the fourth, sixth and eighth holes -- before a string of bogeys on Nos. 11-13. He birdied the par-five 14th for the second day in a row to get back to even.
Jay Vandeventer shot 73 to remain in a tie for 40th at 4-over-par 148. The Bristol freshman rallied after bogeys at the eighth and ninth holes pushed him to 2 over par. Consecutive birdies at 14 and 15 helped offset a bogey on the long par-3 16th.
Justin Walker's 75 moved him to a tie for 25th place at 1-over-par 145. The sophomore from Springfield had two birdies, three bogeys and his first double of the tournament at the par-3 seventh.
Garrick Porteous is competing as an individual and for the second year in a row shot a career-low 71 at The Ridges. The sophomore from England is tied for 29th at 2-over-par 146.
Tennessee, Oregon State and Virginia begin play Sunday 10:10 a.m. Eastern time. The forecast calls for possible morning showers, including a snowflake or two, with temperatures around 40 at the start and perhaps reaching the upper 40s by afternoon.
