Vols Begin Main Draw at ITA Regional

Four Tennessee players advanced in singles Friday to the second round of the ITA Ohio Valley Regional in Bloomington, Ind.
True freshman Rhyne Williams, a ninth seed, breezed through his first round matchup 6-1, 6-2 over Purdue's P.J. Rose, good for his sixth consecutive victory. Senior Davey Sandgren won his match in three rounds, defeating Louisville's Alejandro Callipari 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Junior Matteo Fago, also a ninth seed, won 6-4, 6-4 over Xavier's Patrick Bandy. Redshirt freshman Max Stevens earned a spot in the main draw earlier in the morning and later won his sixth consecutive match over Butler's Benjamin Reynauld in the first round. Stevens was ahead 5-1 when Reynauld retired.
In the morning's third round of qualifying, Stevens earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alex van Gils. True freshman Edward Jones won 6-2, 7-6 (6) against Wright State's Tore Waldhausen.
Stevens and Jones teamed up for the first time in doubles. While the Vols other three doubles pairs received byes into the second round, Stevens and Edwards earned a spot in round of 16 with an 8-6 victory over Daniel Klingenberg and Jorge Yunes of IUPUI.
Competition continues Saturday morning.
