OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - As Tennessee's first varsity eight rowed back into the launching area, hundreds of screaming orange-clad parents and fans cheered on the shell. The Lady Vols had clinched the 2012 Conference USA Rowing Championship, their second in three years.
"The whole hill was covered with fans in their orange and the eight was slowly rowing in front of them--it was really beautiful and meaningful for me," said head coach Lisa Glenn. "It means the world to us to see them over there. It was great to see them over there yelling for their crew."
Tennessee's V8, coxed by Ashley Fichthorn and including Arin Anderson, Nikki Arcamuzi, Hilary Epes, Erika Johnson, Erika Lauderdale, Anita McLure, Evelyn Radford and Rachel White sealed the team victory with a 6-minute 45.8-second gold-medal time.
UT's 2V8+ also won gold, crossing the finish line in 6 minutes 52.40 seconds. The second varsity eight was coxed by Jessie Richardson and included Taylor Athan, Paige Austin, Jennifer Bailey, Katherine Changes, Kristin Coggin, Liz Dickson, Kayla Lucier and Liza Rader.
"It's very gratifying--all credit to our team, they really showed what they could do out there," Glenn said. "We've been very specific with our training and very focused on our training meeting up with our ultimate goals."
For her efforts leading the Lady Vols to the conference title, Glenn was awarded the C-USA Coach of the Year award. Senior Erika Lauderdale, juniors Ashley Fichthorn and Erika Johnson, and sophomore Rachel White were named to the C-USA All-Conference Team, while freshman Kayla Lucier was named C-USA Newcomer of the Year.
