KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee women's rowing team travels to Chattanooga Saturday to compete in the south's largest head race, the Head of the Hooch. The two-day regatta takes place at Ross's Landing on the Tennessee River. The regatta is a head race, competitors row a 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) course.
This season Tennessee will compete in seven races including the Women's Championship 8+, Women's Novice 8+, Women's Championship 2x, Women's Championship 4+ (Row for the Cure) on Saturday and the Women's Championship 1x, Women's Open 2- and the Women's Open 8+ on Sunday. Tennessee will also have an alumni boat race in the Women's Alumni 8+ at 12:50 p.m on Saturday, last season Tennessee's shell finished first place bringing home the gold medal.
The Lady Vols are set to begin races at 12:25 p.m. on Saturday and 9:07 a.m. on Sunday. The lineups for all the races will be announced at a later date.
The Lady Vols began racing in the Head of the Hooch, also known as the Head of the Chattanoochee, in 1995 when the race was held in Georgia. In 2005, due to the large increases in entries each year, the regatta moved to the Chattanooga Ross's Landing Riverfront venue. The venue and city have the capability to accommodate the continue increase in rowers and spectators each year.
Tennessee has a storied history with the race, the Lady Vols have earned a total of 43 medals at the head race. Last season, the Lady Vols posted seven top-ten finishes, including a first place finish in the women's championship four.
