#16 Lady Vols Come Up Short in Home Contest Against Missouri

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The #16 Tennessee volleyball program dropped a tough four set match at home to Missouri at Food City Center (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 17-25).
The Big Orange (16-4, 7-3 SEC) finished the evening with 54 kills, but 26 errors in the match limited them to just a .173 hitting percentage. Tennessee had strong floor defense with 63 digs, adding six blocks and four aces. Missouri (16-7, 7-4 SEC) had the advantage offensively with 58 kills on ,283 hitting, with 64 digs, nine blocks, and six aces.
Hayden Kubik led the way on offense for Tennessee, with 15 kills for her 16th double-digit kill performance of the season. The senior outside hitter also had eight digs and two aces. Starr Williams posted 11 kills, tying a career high with five digs and four blocks.
Middle blocker Chelsea Sutton led the team with five blocks, while also doing her part on offense with eight kills. Caroline Kerr reached 30 assists for the 65th time in her career with 33 and nine assists. Gülce Güçtekin had her second consecutive game with 20 digs and third of the season.
The opening stanza was a back and forth battle that would eventually go the way of Missouri. Tennessee would notch 14 kills in the set, but nine errors limited the team to a .125 hitting percentage. The trio of Kubik, Williams, and Mackenzie Plante paced the attack, each with four kills. Kerr set up the offense with 13 assists, with Güçtekin leading the way with five digs.
Tennessee would even the match in the second set, with a 5-1 run late giving them the win. Kubik led the offense again in the second with five kills. The Tennessee defense stymied Missouri in the attack, limiting it to a .024 hitting percentage. 17 digs as a team as well as five blocks allowed the Lady Vols to tie the match at one set apiece.
After a tight start to the third set, Missouri would create a lead they would not relinquish. The Tiger offense got the better of Tennessee with a hitting advantage of .297 to.159. Missouri carried that momentum into the fourth and final set, with 17 kills and a .444 hitting percentage compared to Tennessee's 14 kills and .186 to seal the match.
Up next, the Lady Vols host #9 Texas A&M on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
