Q&A
Tennessee
vs. Memphis
Nov. 10
Neyland Stadium
(2 p.m./Eastern)
1. What do you
expect from Memphis when the Tigers invade Neyland Stadium Saturday afternoon
for Homecoming?
A - "If history teaches us anything, we will be expecting
a tough football game. Memphis is a good-looking team physically on both
offense and defense. They give you problems with formations and a no-huddle
type offense. It's a challenge to make the changes we need to make quickly.
Defensively, Memphis is a blitzing, pressure-type football team. We need
to be a complete football team against Memphis."
2. What did the
Vols learn in the Notre Dame game that will help get them prepared for
the Memphis game at UT Saturday afternoon?
A - "You draw from your experiences throughout the year. We continue
to show resolve to make the plays that we need to win games. The Notre
Dame game showed there are areas in which we need to improve in order
to go from a pretty good team to a real good team. We need to make our
fundamentals better, as well as prepare our schemes for use against Memphis."
3. When you mentioned
a lack of consistency by the Vols after the Notre Dame game, what steps
were you thinking of as necessary to help the situation?
A - "As a staff you always go back after each game and attack
the problems that you faced. Some fundamental improvements will make us
better. I expect us to be much improved by the time we play Memphis."
4. With late developing
victories becoming routine, is it a point of pride with the Vols to think
of the fourth quarter as belonging to them?
A - "I think the fourth quarter has paid big dividends. I think
our team has shown it is well-conditioned. As the game goes on, they get
a feel for what needs to be done. It shows resolve, also. But from a coach's
standpoint, I'd rather get off to a fast start and have consistency throughout
the game."
5. How unusual
is it for a staff to draw up plays on the sideline as was done for the
final touchdown against Notre Dame?
A - "I wouldn't say it's unusual, although it's not done every
day. We were fortunate in the Notre Dame situation that we had a senior
tight end who knew exactly what we were going to do and a quarterback
who also understood what we were talking about."
