#19 Vols Rally for 3-2 Win at Arkansas in Season Finale
October 26, 2017 | Soccer
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Behind a game-winning header by junior Khadija Shaw, the No. 19 Tennessee soccer team rallied for a 3-2 victory over Arkansas on Friday in the regular-season finale.
The Vols (14-3-1, 6-3-1 SEC) fell behind twice and matched the Arkansas (9-9-1, 4-5-1) both times with goals by junior Rylie O'Keefe in the first half and redshirt freshman Erin Gilroy in the second half.Â
With the game tied 2-2, Shaw scored her team-leading 14th goal of the season off a pass from junior Danielle Marcano in the 81st minute.Â
"That was tremendous," Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky said. "The guts our team showed yet again were remarkable. All season long. Winning is hard. It's hard physically. It's hard emotionally. And tonight we just kept plugging away, with a several special moments of brilliance in front of goal. Now we move onto the most fun part of the season -- the postseason. Everything on the line. Single elimination. Our kids cannot wait."
The Razorbacks took charge in the fourth minute when Taylor Malham recovered a loose ball in front of the goal and drove a shot into the right side of the net.Â
Tennessee took just two shots in the first half but made the second one count. O'Keefe recorded the equalizer in the 32nd minute, scoring in the middle off a cross by Shaw from the right side.Â
The score was tied at 1-1 at halftime, but Arkansas retook the lead just four minutes into the second half.
Haley Vanfossen took a free kick near midfield for the Razorbacks and Mary Alice Vignola went up for a defensive play, but her header went untouched into Tennessee's goal.Â
Gilroy evened the score at 2-2 when she rocketed in her third goal of the season off a pass from O'Keefe.Â
Record Setter: Shaw scores when the Vols need it most. Of her 14 goals this season, a school record seven of them have been game winners. She was previously tied with Caroline Brown (2011) and Kylee Rossi (2007) with six game-winning goals. That total also leads the conference.Â
More Shaw Stats: Her 14 goals this season are the most by a UT player since Allison Campbell scored a school-record 17 in 1998.
