#26/24 UT Has Three Golfers In Top 10 After Opening Round
Kiawah Island, S.C. – Playing in windy conditions, the #26/24 Tennessee men's golf team managed to shrug off the elements and shoot a 10-over-par score of 298 and grab the lead Sunday after the opening round of the East Bay Deli Classic.
Â
Playing alongside the Atlantic Ocean at the Turtle Point Golf Course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Vols stand six strokes ahead of second-place Rutgers with the only sub-300 score of the day. The Scarlet Knights carded an opening round of 304 to stand 16 over par. Behind UT and Rutgers were Chattanooga (309), High Point (311) and Jacksonville State (312) rounding out the top five.
Â
Senior Lorenzo Scalise (Milan, Italy) and redshirt freshman Sean Wilcox (Frisco, Texas) led the way for Jim Kelson's squad, firing 1-over 73s on Sunday. They are tied for third place, while sophomore Rhys Nevin (Cheshire, England) gave Tennessee three among the individual top 10 with a 3-over 75 on day one that earned a tie for eighth.
Â
Sophomore Brayden Garrison (Nolensville, Tenn.) contributed UT's fourth counting round, tying for 16th with a 5-over 77. True freshman Spencer Cross (Sevierville, Tenn.) matched his teammate's stroke total and position. Fellow true freshman Chase Roswall (Bristol, Tenn.) rounded out the Vols in competition, carding a 90 over the opening 18 holes.
Â
On a day when good scores were hard to come by, Tennessee led all teams with 62 pars and were fifth in birdies with 12. Nevin paced the Vols with 13 pars, while Cross and Garrison had 12 each. Scalise was tied for fourth among all golfers with four birdies.
Â
The Vols return to action on Monday, teeing off on No. 1 at 10:06 a.m. ET.
