Grubbs Leads Lady Vols Past LSU 3-0

BATON ROUGE, La. – Tessa Grubbs had a team-high 11 kills and a .375 hitting percentage as Tennessee picked up a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21) road win against the Tigers of LSU at the Pete Maravich Center Sunday afternoon.
Breana Jeter had a hitting percentage of .438, while Alyssa Andreno had one of .455 for Tennessee (11-9, 4-7 SEC), and they combined for 17 kills as the Lady Vols picked up their second SEC road win of the season.
Tennessee used a 7-0 run to tie the first set up at 17-all. From that point, the two teams would trade points and ended up tying the set five times before the Lady Vols took a 23-22 lead off a kill by Andreno. Tennessee never looked back on its way to taking the opening set 25-23.
Grubbs led the Lady Vols with five kills and a .333 hitting percentage in the opening set. As a team, UT had an impressive .324 hitting percentage and 16 kills.
The Lady Vols opened the second set on a 12-3 run on their way to a dominating 25-19 set win. It was all Tennessee, as Jeter who had six kills and a hitting percentage of .364. LSU went on a 5-0 run midway through the set to cut the lead to 23-17, but it was not enough as the Lady Vols were on a mission and took a 2-0 match lead by winning the set.
Tennessee used a 5-0 run to take its first lead in the third set at 9-6 and never give that lead up. The Tigers went on a 4-0 run late to get back in the match and make it 24-21 Lady Vols before Grubbs put the match away with the final kill.
The Lady Vols finished with a .311 hitting percentage with 45 kills on 106 attacks. Throughout the match, UT surrendered the lead on twice in the match. Sedona Hansen saw her 20th straight match with 10 or more assists.
LSU was led by Gina Tillis, who finished the match with 16 kills on 39 attacks. The Tigers had 23 errors and a hitting percentage of just .197.
Tennessee will be back home next weekend, as the Lady Vols welcome South Carolina to Thompson-Boling Arena on Friday night at 7 p.m., and then the No. 4 Florida Gators on Sunday afternoon.
