Four Lady Vols Card Top-17 Finishes as UT Places Third
October 03, 2017 | Women's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. -- Tennessee women's golf carded 293 in the final round of the Magnolia Invitational on Tuesday to place third in the tournament. The Volunteers finished the invite with a 54-hole total of 872 (+8) and four players placed in the top 17.
The finish marks the Lady Vols' second top-three finish this season and the team's first back-to-back placement in the top three since the beginning of the 2015-16 season.
"We had another good tournament," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We were disappointed to finish third, but the other two teams played really well and we just didn't get it going today. Waverly had her first top-10 finish of her career which was great to see and all in all, we played good golf."
Freshman Waverly Whiston recorded the top finish for UT and the best of her career, tying for eighth place (217, +1). In the second round, she shot a four-under 68 and made the first eagle of her collegiate career.
"It definitely felt really good to finish out well this week," Whiston said. "I know that there are parts of my game that I can definitely improve on, so I'm going to focus on that and the next tournament coming up this fall."
In the final round, senior Blakesly Warren and junior Ariana Macioce each carded 72 to tie for 12th place and 39th place, respectively. Warren finished the tournament with a score of 212 (+3) and Macioce shot 228 (+12).
Both Anna Newell and Micheala Williams tied for 17th place at four-over-par (220). Newell, a senior, shot a tournament-low round of 67 on the opening day of the invitational. Williams carded 72 in the first round, marking her second round of par or better this season.
Competing as an individual, Mariah Smith tied for 41st place (+13) after shooting 229 over 54-holes.
Ole Miss took home the team title with a 10-under 854 while Memphis shot seven-under in the final round to move up into second place (861, -3). Individually, Ole Miss' Julia Johnson held off Memphis' Abby Herrmann in a two-hole playoff for medalist honors. Sydney Colwill of Memphis finished the tournament in third place (212, -4).
The Lady Vols round out the fall schedule later this month as they compete in the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 30-31.
