Muamba Signs with Men's Tennis
November 08, 2017 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee men's tennis head coach Chris Woodruff announced his first signee Wednesday: Nicaise Muamba of Laval, Quebec.
The 17-year-old Canadian national champion will join the Vols in January.
"We are all really excited to welcome Nicaise to the Tennessee Tennis family," Woodruff said. "He's an extremely talented athlete with a bright future ahead of him. I am looking forward to watching him achieve great things here at Tennessee."
Muamba, a right hander with a two-handed backhand, won the U18 Outdoor Rogers Junior national Championships in 2016 as a 15-year-old and reached the finals of the U18 national indoor championships earlier this year. He was also a U16 division national champion.
He has a career-best ITF junior ranking of 223 and earned his first ATP points by reaching the doubles quarterfinals of the Winnipeg Challenger in July.
In addition to individual success, Muamba brings plenty of team tennis experience to the Vols. He was a member of Canada's Junior Davis Cup team that reached the finals last year.
Muamba will be one of four freshmen on the Vols' nine-player squad, joining Andrew Rogers (Brentwood, Tenn.), Ryan Smith (Toowoomba, Australia) and Adam Walton (Home Hill, Australia).
CANADIAN CONNECTIONS: Muamba is the second Canadian player in Tennessee program history, joining 1999 All-American and three-time All-SEC Mark Parsons. Since finishing his UT career, Parsons has become one of the top platform tennis players in the world.
